Description: An estimated 1,000-10,000 species are going extinct every year, termed the sixth mass extinction. Likewise, human welfare is increasingly impacted in both developed and developing nations by many of the same factors that are causing the biodiversity crisis: habitat loss and degradation, overexploitation of natural resources, pollution, invasive species introductions, and anthropogenic climate change. We will examine the major challenges facing our planet including economic, social, and political issues surrounding biodiversity loss, and describe methodologies for addressing them. We will explore both past development and conservation efforts, and briefly review historical patterns in select regions throughout the world, emphasizing ecological, socio-political, economic, cultural, and technological factors associated with the extinction crisis. This course introduces essential concepts in conservation biology, focusing on a system that has created a global crisis for people, wildlife, and ecosystems. We will study the principles underlying older and newer approaches to conservation biology, as well as explore evidence that may illuminate when, and under what conditions, approaches to each may be successful. The paradigm is shifting towards the integration of human communities in the management and conservation of protected areas, and the valuation of ecosystem services. Innovative ways are needed to integrate human communities with conservation efforts while adding value to ecosystem services. Through this lens, we will assess the relationship of people and protected areas, investigate the role economics and politics play in decision making, and debate the costs and benefits of a new paradigm shift away from traditional conservation. The Tropical Conservation Fund is now offering a certification program for aspiring conservation biologists and wildlife managers. This series of courses provides introductory career development for those who are interested or currently working with wildlife
